May 28 is Menstrual Hygiene Day, a day when individuals and organizations all over the world join hands to end period poverty and the stigmatization around menstruation. Maybe due to the COVID-19 pandemic and everyone being home and on the internet, this year's virtual celebration is really reaching critical mass. One of the many slogans around this year's campaign is: Periods Don't Stop For Pandemics, and Neither Do We! #PeriodsInPandemics
The global theme for MH Day 2020 is "It's Time For Action", and that's exactly what we're seeing in Burkina Faso. This is the 4th year that the day has been celebrated in Burkina Faso, and BARKA has been one of the organizations to plan and finance this national observance for all 4 years. This week BARKA and its NGO partners reached a major milestone when the Minister of Education said this issue was on his government's radar as a top priority in new educational curriculum being developed. In just 4 short years, we've taken this from an issue no one would talk about to becoming a priority for the Ministry of Education!
Also on May 28, BARKA's MHM Project Leaders will be on the radio to sensitize people throughout the eastern region of Burkina on this important topic and to continue to beak the silence around the taboo of menstruation.
We could never have achieved so much so quickly without your support of this project. We can't thank you enough for your vision, your generous financial support and your empathy for the situation girls and women face every day in Burkina Faso. Thank you, barka. Together we can end #PeriodPoverty.
