We continue to make progress in actions to empower Mayan girls and young women in Chiapas, in order to strengthen gender equality and prevent all types of violence against them. In the quarter from December 2022 to February 2023, these are the main actions that the Ch'ieltik team carried out thanks to your support.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND PARTICIPATION

During the months of November and December 2022, we worked with the youth initiative of Nuevo Huixtan Telebachillerato Comunitario “Clase 165”, made up of 13 students who created a cultural product to prevent gender violence. The short film they made was intended to make more young people reflect on the importance of eradicating the different types of violence that are exercised but at the same time identify what protection factors can be counted on if these situations arise at any time.

We also accompany the “Bolom-citos” youth initiative, of the Telebachillerato Comunitario 165, from the town of Nuevo Huixtan, in Las Margaritas, Chiapas. The students made a short film to prevent school dropout since it is estimated that in 2022 about 125 girls, boys and young people will drop out of school every day for reasons of poverty and social marginalization. This short was proposed to encourage more young people to continue their studies to obtain more tools that allow them to achieve their goals.

On December 6^th. we held a Sports Meeting for women's soccer teams, in the community of Nuevo San Juan Chamula, in Las Margaritas. There was a participation of 102 youths who, in addition to celebrating soccer matches, carried out a campaign to highlight the importance of creating sports spaces for girls and young people. In this safe space for coexistence, great enthusiasm could be observed on the part of the girls to be part of nutritional dynamics for their physical and mental strengthening.

On December 8^th. we held a Community Meeting in the town of Nuevo Huixtan with the participation of 64 students from the Telebachillerato Comunitario 165. In this space they presented their youth initiatives as well as their cultural products to the students, teachers and the community authorities, which led to a conversation to reflect on how to prevent gender violence and school dropout and, also, on how to strengthen youth leadership and open more spaces for participation for the Mayan girls and youth of Chiapas.

PREVENT AND ERADICATE GENDER VIOLENCE

In January 2023, we carried out two Awareness Workshops for bilingual primary and secondary teachers in the community of El Pozo, municipality of San Juan Cancuc, Chiapas. This Gender Violence Prevention Workshop addressed the following topics:

• Understand gender gaps

• Understand the forms and modalities of violence

• Prevent and eradicate violent behaviors

• Promote and implement protective factors in school classrooms.

These workshops were proposed to analyze the impact of gender violence, prevent violent behavior and implement protection factors in the classroom. As a starting point, the sociocultural and historical construction of how a man and a woman are perceived to act in the indigenous community context and what this implies was analyzed.

CHILD RIGHTS

At the Cuauhtemoc Bilingual Elementary School in El Pozo, San Juan Cancuc, Chis., a Good Treatment Workshop was held for 5^th. grade students, with a participation of 13 girls and 10 boys. The purpose was to publicize the rights of children and the guarantors of those rights. This subject usually goes unnoticed by girls and boys because these issues are not addressed in depth or are not addressed in schools. In addition to this, there are no instances that provide information in indigenous communities.

PREVENT SCHOOL DROPOUT

We held the "Youth Participation and School Dropout" Conversation with "Hilando Redes" a women group from Chiloljá community, in San Juan Cancuc municipality, Chiapas. From the testimony and conversation about the problems experienced by the young people of this community, it was highlighted that, for the most part, they are not taken into account either in private or public spaces. They also discussed the impact that school dropout is having. Eight women participated in this activity, both adults and young people.

MAYAN YOUTH PARTICIPATION

On February 28^th. Ch'ieltik guided our “Mesas Intersectoriales” held at the CECyTE 18 facilities in San Pedro Chenalhó, Chis., with the objective of articulating efforts between representatives of the CECyTE 18 Youth Committee and the EST 48, educational institutions and civil society organizations such as; ACAS A.C., Redias A.C. Cultural Winds A.C. and Cántaro Azul A.C. The purpose of this meeting was to motivate youth participation in the municipality, given the main problems it faces, such as; gender violence, early unions and marriages. One of the central discussions and analysis on the issue of youth rights is the constant clash of thought between the uses and customs of the community that makes it difficult to guarantee the rights of girls, adolescents and young people from the indigenous communities of Chiapas.

Hello, dear ally. It's a pleasure to greet you again!

We share with you the actions we have carried out in the last quarter to prevent gender-based violence against Mayan girls and young people from Chiapas.

First of all, let me tell you that in Nuevo San Juan Chamula our team continues to give soccer training to 25 girls from that community who find in sports a form of expression and personal fulfillment. At the same time, we continue to strengthen their leadership, promoting their participation within their own communities. We share, at the same time, useful knowledge and tools to prevent pregnancies and early unions that during the Covid-19 pandemic increased exponentially.

The context of the Coronavirus pandemic led to an increase in different types of violence in the indigenous communities where we work. It is for this reason that at Rufino Tamayo 247 Telesecundaria School we continue working to eradicate and prevent violence against women, promoting, in parallel, harmonious coexistence among all people. We accompany the students of this campus to carry out a campaign to eliminate gender violence and these are some of the informative posters to make to raise awareness in the student community. Four students shared with us that the greatest learning obtained was managing to generate respectful communication between classmates and classmates in order to, together, make agreements in favor of gender equality.

At the beginning of October we held a discussion to strengthen youth leadership in Cobach 328 of the Chiapas ejido, located in the municipality of Las Margaritas. We had the participation of 33 young women and 15 young men who talked about how to promote the continuity of studies among Mayan youth and prevent school dropout. They analyzed the consequences of not having medium-long and term goals, the factors that prevent youth from carrying out their life plans, and the importance of getting involved in issues that affect them as a population group. In addition, it was reinforced how to promote non-violent communication, contributes to strengthening safe and peaceful spaces for children and youth.

On September 13th., we held a youth leadership seminar to prevent school dropout and promote healthy habits at the Cobach 337 School in the Francisco Sarabia community, municipality of Comitan de Dominguez. It was attended by 33 adolescent women, 39 adolescent men who, in different work groups, analyzed the importance of not abandoning their studies, having a life project, avoiding early unions and strengthening habits that keep them away from addictions.

On September also the actions to eradicate gender violence at the Telesecundaria Rufino Tamayo 427 school in Nuevo San Juan Chamula were the main topic of the discussion where 60 young women and 60 young men participated. We spread the tool called "Violentometer", a useful graphic and didactic material to visualize the manifestations of violence that are often confused or unknown in everyday life. The youths analyzed how, in dating, greater violence is exerted towards women, and what are the protective factors against it.

September was the month in which face-to-face classes finally began to resume in various educational establishments where we work. Given the increase in school dropouts, we greatly reinforced the issue of how to prevent school dropouts. Our operational team held a forum at Cobach 164, in the Plan de Ayala community in Las Margaritas, and we had a large participation of young people: 74 young women and 67 young men who shared their experiences during the long period of confinement where different rights of youths were blurred since before the closure of schools, young people were fully incorporated into care work or to contribute to economic support. Among the most vulnerable groups are women and girls, hence this quarter the reflection on how to recover and strengthen their rights.

Ch'ieltik continues its work to promote actions to promote gender equality for indigenous girls, adolescents and youth in Chiapas.

In the first semester of 2022, our team continued to broaden the bases to promote inclusive communication, free of stereotypes and discrimination; gave training with a gender perspective, and outlined actions to help eliminate gender violence in Mayan communities.

Women-butterflies of Chenalho

On March 8th., within the framework of International Women's Day, we created spaces to reflect on the normalization of violence against Mayan women and girls. In the community of San Pedro Chenalho, the importance of raising awareness about the situation experienced by women and girls in indigenous communities and the world was analyzed. The normalization of gender inequality conditions refer to problems of abuse of power, discrimination against women who express themselves with acts of physical, sexual, economic, patrimonial and psychological violence. The young women reflected on the importance of not remaining silent, participating for and having support networks (public and private institutions, civil organizations and others) that spread a life free of violence against girls and women.

A women's basketball tournament was held to motivate women's participation. In this space the young women were able to express what their hearts and thoughts say. Each of the eight basketball teams captured in phrases and drawings what it means for them to be women: "We are like butterflies: we transform ourselves to become

women of struggle and resistance."

Young women and the right to education in San Juan Cancuc

Within the framework of the same commemoration, at CECYTE No. 05 high school, a discussion was held with young women and men who reflected on the actions that women have carried out so that their rights are respected within the communities: especially, the right to education.

Of twelve women and ten men who participated, the latter coincided in pointing out that making gender equality effective should not be an exclusive task of women but rather a joint effort that favors the rights of all people.

The main message that was shared in this conversation was, in the voice of the students, that “women can dream big and continue studying”, if they so propose.

A forum was also held at COBACH 175, where the importance of youth participation was discussed, where the voice of indigenous youth is essential to make significant changes in the community.

In addition, awards were given and three students who satisfactorily participated in a photography contest organized by Ch'iletik were awarded prizes. The central theme of this contest was to discover and portray women from indigenous communities and, in parallel, to strengthen the digital photography skills of young Mayans.

Soccer and gender in Nuevo San Juan Chamula

In this municipality of the Jungle Region, in Chiapas, Soccer training has continued with 15 students from this community. The activity adds to the strengthening of women's leadership,

through teamwork, while contributing to the prevention of early pregnancies and promoting actions to stop gender violence.

The young soccer players involve more young women so that they are interested in their sports activity and in addition to inviting them to join "Juvenil Pacayal", they share and analyze gender issues.

Actions to eradicate gender violence in Nuevo Huiztan

On May 17th, the "Forum on Prevention of violence against women" was held. It took place in Community Telebachillerato 165, in the Nuevo Huixtan community, and was attended by 26 young women and 26 young men.

The young women and men talked about the "violentometer" and the warnings that many times in dating are exercised and more about women, and about prevention and actions that would help find protective factors to be able to help young women and prevent forced marriages or early pregnancies.

Subsequently, the Forum "Prevention of violence against women" was held at Telesecundaria 926 Jose Vasconcelos Calderon, in Nuevo Huixtan community.

On May 31st., 34 young women and 29 young men participated and reflected on the causes and consequences of violence against women.

The young people shared experiences in which many young people reported that, in their communities, they marry at an early age and, above all, the lack of information about their sexual and reproductive rights, the final reflection was made with them and them where they proposed to act to help your community.

On June 17, the Intergenerational Conversation on the Prevention of Gender Violence was held in Las Margaritas, Chis.

Ch'ieltik together with the organization "Extraordinary Women" facilitated a talk where girls, adolescents and young people, of different ages, presented their point of view about what they know about gender violence and learned to empathize in order to act and lead the message of peace to their friends, friends and people with whom they live and thus prevent gender violence.
