General program updates
In Guatemala, the school year started on January 14 for private schools and February 15 for public schools and, depending on the COVID-19 “traffic light” system classes are running fully virtual, in-person, or hybrid, with hybrid being the most common. The majority of Limitless Horizons Ixil scholars are currently in Chajul having fully virtual or hybrid classes and some are doing hybrid classes at their schools in other parts of Guatemala. An example of a hybrid week is two mornings at home and three mornings that they go to school, divided into small groups.
In 2021, 100% of our scholars reported that our services helped them to stay in school and continue studying. We provided several services to support our scholars in their studies, including 98 hours of virtual classes, 14 hours of workshops, individual and group psychology sessions, and 209 food and hygiene baskets.
Student Spotlight
We are delighted to share a personal update from one of our Youth Development Program students, Rosa María, who is 18 years old. We sat down with Rosa María to get an update on how her studies have been progressing!
How have your classes been?
My classes have been going well and I find them interesting because I have learned many things that I did not know. For example in accounting I am learning how to do daily bookkeeping and how to classify accounts.
Who has been supporting your studies?
Limitless Horizons Ixil has helped me with my financial scholarship and general learning support. My godmother has also supported me, and recently we celebrated my birthday together!
What are your hopes for this year?
I hope that we will continue to receive training and reinforcement classes from Limitless Horizons Ixil. I want to improve my grades at school as well as learn as much as possible in my courses so that the exams are not difficult for me. I also hope my family will be well, and without illnesses.
How was learning during the pandemic?
During the pandemic I was at home with my family and I learned a lot about respect, accepting the opinions of others, accepting people as they are, and having open communication with my parents. The pandemic brought many challenges for my studies, and even now I only receive two days of class in person, whereas before the pandemic I was receiving classes in person every day.
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I weave traditional huipiles (shirts) for myself, clean my house, wash dishes or watch videos on my cell phone. I also use YouTube to help me with my math and accounting homework.
