Rosa is a hardworking and talented artisan, weaving shawls and huipiles (intricate and colorful blouses). She is a mother of two living children, having lost two others as babies. She was very fortunate to attend more school than most mothers in her community of Chajul, Guatemala, but she doesn't have the skills necessary for work in the formal economy, so she relies on her weaving for income. Her husband had to go to the capital six hours away to find work and has little to send home after covering his living expenses. This leaves Rosa as the primary breadwinner for the family.
Rosa has a 14-year-old daughter named Johanna. Johanna is an eager, bright student, earning high grades and successes in public speaking competitions. After her baby brother's death two years ago, Johanna resolved to become a doctor to help other children like him. Her dream is that no family in Chajul would suffer illness like hers has. Although Rosa would like to support her daughter’s aspirations to finish high school and go to university, she simply does not have the means to do so on her weaving income.
With your support, Limitless Horizons Ixil strives to support families like Johanna’s, where parents dream of a formal education for their children. As one of our 70 Youth Development Program scholars, Johanna receives individualized support plus tuition, supplies, six hours weekly of academic enrichment and computer classes, and life skills workshops. Thanks to your generosity, girls like Johanna will grow into strong, educated female leaders with opportunities their parents could barely dream of for themselves.
On behalf of Rosa, Johanna, and the Limitless Horizons Ixil team, thank you for being a part of our family and participating in our work. Transformational change is happening in Chajul, one generation at a time, because of supporters like you.
Gracias por su apoyo! (Thank you for your support!)
