Empower Sebastian and Miratus to get badminton players in the favelas back to tournaments! This project already generated food for 500 families during Covid-19, delivered by Sebastian & his young athletes. Along with food, Miratus handed out 1000 children's books about Sebastian to nourish children's dreams, fight discrimination, & provide wholesome activities to kids. The crucial key for the future is to get these incredible athletes off of the streets and back to badminton tournaments.
Sebastian is a world-class community leader who uses badminton to transform the kids of the Chacrinha neighborhood. He uses an innovative method of samba dancing to create champions, and 2 of his players were in the 2016 Rio Olympics and his team dominates Brazilian and Pan-Am tournaments. Sebastian and his 200 athletes turned to Covid relief, distributing some 80 tons of food and turning the badminton courts into a relief staging center. It is now critical to get the kids back to badminton.
100% of your donations will provide resources for tournament travel. Many families in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro have never traveled outside of the state, and when the kids travel to tournaments, it boosts self-esteem and respect at school and on the streets. It also gives them dreams to train harder, and 17 of the athletes receive monthly badminton stipends to help support their families. The travel fund is empty. No player should be denied travel to tournaments due to a lack of funds.
Sebastian Oliviera has a 20-year track record of service and local leadership in Chacrinha. Featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, in an award-winning documentary, and now a children's book, Sebastian is one of the region's superstar social activists. While the current pressing need was food, the long-term impact is the success of Sebastian's Miratus Badminton program that transforms the lives of young people and gives them an alternative to illicit activities prevalent in the favela.
