Empower Rural Entrepreneurs in Uganda

1. Background

In Uganda, 87% of Ugandans lacked bank accounts and this means that more half of the Ugandan population can't have access to bank loans let alone be in position to pay the high interest rates change by finance institutions. Development Alert adopting the Bridging Gaps Model is implementing projects an Interest-Free Microloans Project designed to provide small, interest-free loans to low-income individuals or small businesses in underprivileged areas. The initiative is alleviating poverty, empowering individuals to start or expand their businesses, and foster community development.

2. Objectives of the Project

The main objectives of the Interest-Free Microloan Project are as follows:

• Financial Inclusion: To provide individuals from marginalized communities access to capital that they otherwise might not have access to.
• Entrepreneurial Growth: To stimulate entrepreneurial activity in low-income areas by providing the necessary funds for individuals to start businesses.
• Social Empowerment: To support gender equality and empower women and marginalized groups by providing them with equal opportunities.
• Community Development: To boost local economies by creating or enhancing small businesses that generate jobs and promote community resilience.

3. Project Key Milestones

• The project distributed interest-free microloans to 65 Youth, Women and Men  
• 65 Businesses have been established and/or boosted
• Household incomes of 65 households improved
• Rural communities have been empowered with business skills and financial literacy
• Jobs have been created
• Improved quality of life
• Women Empowerment has been improved in the community
• Increase resource base as members can now access financial resources from within the community without having to think of banks.

Conclusion

The Interest-Free Microloan Projects successfully impacts the lives of many individuals, providing them with the opportunity to uplift their economic status without the burden of interest. While some challenges persist, the project has made significant progress, demonstrating the potential for scalable success.

Continued support, both financial and educational, will be crucial in ensuring the long-term success of the beneficiaries and the sustainability of the project.

Globally, 1.4 billion adults lack banking services, making them ineligible for conventional loans. Almost half of these people worldwide live in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In Uganda, the National Labour Force Survey (2021) shows that 87% of Ugandans-over 30 Million people lacked bank accounts. This means that more half of the Ugandan population can’t have access to bank loans let alone be in position to pay the high interest rates change by finance institutions in the country.

With your support, we have been able support rural communities Interest-Free Microloans, providing 50 unbanked rural entreprenuers with interest-free microloans based on PAY-IT-FORWARD mode. This has increased their access to capital, support economic activities, reduced debt burden because of no interest charges and focus only on repaying the principal amount thus reducing on financial stress, improved financial stability as interest-free loans help the group build a stable financial foundation, promoting financial inclusion and gender equality and contributing to poverty reduction and improved livelihoods.
