Marracuene project update

By Rosa Costa | Mozambique Country Director

Thanks to your support, our project in Marracuene District, Mozambique, is transforming lives through a locally driven poultry farming initiative. This year, the program has not only surpassed its breeding and sales targets but sparked an incredible wave of entrepreneurship among the women involved.

Through hands-on training in poultry husbandry, feed formulation, and small business skills, participants are now confidently growing their enterprises. With support from our team and access to start-up resources like chicks, feed, and incubators these women are increasing their household incomes and reinvesting in their families and communities. “One of the most exciting developments has been the way women are embracing new ways to sell their products,” shared Ana Zandamela, our Program Coordinator in Mozambique. “They’re using WhatsApp groups, going door-to-door, and coordinating transport to bigger markets. This energy is creating real momentum for change.” Income from chicken and egg sales is already well above target. Many women are now paying school fees, improving their homes, or starting new side businesses demonstrating that when women are equipped with the right tools, they uplift everyone around them.

Take Mrs. Florinda, for example. Since joining the project in 2022, she has gone from beginner to respected poultry producer. She started with just 45 hens and 5 cocks and now manages over 75 birds. She’s shared chicks with 20 local families and developed innovative ways to cut costs making homemade feed from cracked maize and papaya leaves and selling chicken manure to nearby farmers. “The project has brought many benefits to my family,” she said. “We used to plan when we could eat eggs or chicken. Now we eat them whenever we want. I bake cakes, sell chicks to neighbours, and fertilize my garden with the manure. We’ve turned our backyard into a small business. I dream of growing my flock to 200 birds.”

These are the kinds of stories your generosity makes possible. Thank you for believing in the power of community-led, sustainable development. Together, we’re helping women build stronger, healthier futures for their families.
