Summary

This project will empower 800 smallholder farmers in most rural communities of the Eastern Province of Zambia with training in sustainable agriculture, farming inputs, and reliable markets for their produce. Our goal is to move 800 of these smallholder farmers from living in poverty into the middle-class status, enabling them to increase their income from the current $133 per hectare to $357 by the end of this project through the promotion of legume farming.

Challenge

There are about 1.6 million smallholder farmers in Zambia who cultivate maize in monoculture and are among the poorest of the poor. Most of these farmers don't have knowledge of the alternative crops such as soybeans which do not only has a high price value on the market than maize but also help fix nitrogen in the soil and improve their fertility. This project will affect directly 800 smallholder farmers who live in the Eastern Province of Zambia.

Solution

The project will provide 800 smallholder farmers with training in sustainable agriculture, farming inputs, and also access to the market for their harvested produce. By introducing legumes such as soybeans, sugar beans, and cowpeas, the project will help increase food security for these families and also improve the soil through nitrogen fixation due to the promotion of legumes.

Long-Term Impact

The project will train and empower 800 smallholder farmers allowing them to rise from poverty, which in turn will make them able to provide for their families' health, education, and well-being. The project will also stop smallholder farmers from cutting more trees to clear land for farming because of the nitrogen fixation that the legumes we are promoting fix in their land. This will in turn reduce deforestation and also have a positive reduction on climate change and global warming.
