Empower the lives of 400 talented peruvian kids

Peru Champs has as its main objective to diminish the gap of educational inequality that exists in Peru, providing scholarships to talented children of low resources (who are called champs) and giving them the opportunity to study and obtain a good education.

A Champ is a talented -in academics, arts or sports-, underprivileged kid with high leadership potential. He/she receives a world-class education to become one of the future leaders of a sustainable Peru.

In order to obtain the scholarship we have a rigorous selection process through different modalities: massive convocations, agreements with artistic and sports organizations recognized by the government, and corporate alliances.

In 2020, we empower the lives of more than 2000 talented Peruvian kids in 15 cities in Peru. They got 75% academic scholarship for Innova Schools, a leadership program to help them develop soft skills and school supplies.

In addition, we provide social-emotional and academic support to ensure Champs' well-being by monitoring the following points:

• Adapting: We follow-up the adapting process of the new Champs in an academic, social and psychological field. 
• Follow up: We follow-up the Champs to identify children in psychological and emotional risk, and also the success stories. 
• Update: We continuosly map Champs risk factors after their admission to Peru Champs. 
• Communication: We are in constant communication with Innova Schools and Champs' family to develop interventions when needed. 
• Accompaniment: Various workshops and a conscious parenting program to strengthen the bonds of families and empower them as a fundamental axis in the formation of the Champs.
• Psychoeducation:  We seek to strengthen socioemotional education in families and reinforce the protective factors that can influence the development of our Champs.

Regarding the leadership program, since 2020, due to the global pandemic, we reinvented ourselves and managed to virtualize all our programs. We had more than 22 projects, some simultaneously, nationwide!

Our Leadership Program has several projects aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 1O: Reduction of Inequalities, where the gender and sustainability approach is worked transversally.

Environmental: 2nd and 3erd → Develop a concern for and a link with the environment. 

Workshop: 4th and 5th → Convert Champs into agents of change by sensitizing the community about the importance of respecting the elderly.

Entrepreneurial: 6th → Create a business plan based on the recognition of resources and tools to thrive.

Mentoring: 7th and 8th → Learn how to manage emotions and develop social abilities.

Give Back Project: 9th → Identify a problem in a community and elaborate a plan to solve it.

Champ Champ: 10th and 11th → Help Champs identify a career path by organizing visits to companies and organizations.

Coaching: 10th and 11th → Help them decide which path they would like to take after finishing high school by creating an integral life plan.

On the other hand, in Peru Champs we grant one year-long scholarships and automatically renew these as long as the following requirements are met:

Champs:

1. Must have an average grade of at least 15 (academic talent), 13 (artistic or sports talent) or A (primary).
2. Comply with Innova Schools internal rules.              

Parents:

1. Must pay 25% of the monthly tuition on time. 
2. Attend at least 4 sessions for parents each year. 
3. Still have an economic need.

• Renewed (80%)
• Not renewed 251 (12%)

- Improvements in their socioeconomic level 

- Low grades 

- Voluntary retirement

Location of the school:

• Lima: 78%
• Regions of Peru: 22%

• Artistic and sports: 5%

Champs’ GPA 2020: 16,87 (On a scale from 0 to 20)

INSPIRING CHAMPS:

Enrique is a 17-year-old Champ with exceptional musical talent. Since he was 10 years old he plays violin, Peruvian cajon and guitar. However, the instrument he loves the most is the viola. Enrique says that thanks to music he has been able to overcome all the moments in which he could not find a way out and every time he has felt frustrated, it has been his therapy. Enrique, our talented Champ, has managed to obtain a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music and hopes to continue making his dreams come true. Know more about his story in:

• Empower lives through education

Kristell is 15 years old and lives in Chiclayo, Peru. She signed up in Peru Champs about three years ago, thanks to her grandmother, who found out about the program from a flyer she found in the store. The Champ has always been a good student, she entered as an academic talent; however, at the first bimester didn’t get the grades she expected, even in her star courses: Math and Science.'I came from a different school, where they dictated everything to you and you just had to listen and repeat,' she tells us. Kristell decided to strive and take into account the advice from her new friends, which still serve her today: Research more about any topic after each class and work as a team.

At the end of the year, she saw the results of her effort and managed to renew her scholarship with an outstanding achievement. For the following year, she was already considered a leader, since it is she who now helped her new colleagues to understand the methodology and the importance of being interested in social issues.

In addition to academics, Kristell really enjoys music, dancing and oratory. She doesn't miss a performance and her specialty is folkloric dance. She plays organ, violin and ukulele, 'I also sing, but it's not my strong point”, She says.

The Champ forms part of the MUN Innova Schools Chiclayo and has participated in different competitions with projects that are intended to solve problems of our society. This is how Translated Signs was born, an initiative that seeks to generate learning material for deaf-mute children. In her short years, Kristell tells us excitedly: 'It is impressive to know the stories about these girls and boys who possess skills in things that we do not have such as: language skills; they are able to read and remember the written stories and interpret them within their own sign language.'

As a child, she had the opportunity to participate in different volunteers, but it was with these children that she realized that she wanted to be part of the new generation with basic knowledge about sign language and inclusion from an early age.

Kristell seeks to reach out to more people and to learn about her mission to expand the borders of deaf-mute people and to make everybody that they are part of a culture, and they should not be discriminated against, but a source of pride.
