Being able to read and write is a basic human right. Yet, Indigenous Australian children continue to fall through the cracks of our education system, trapping them in a cycle of vulnerability and illiteracy. This devastating gap is particularly evident in remote Indigenous communities, where the writing abilities of year 9 students are at year 1 level. If not addressed in the early years, this issue continues into adulthood, and this is a national tragedy.
ALNF's ground-breaking, community-driven project is unique in addressing a critical gap in service delivery to meet children's early learning needs. The project provides training and ongoing mentoring support that empowers community members with effective techniques and learning resources to teach children the foundational language and literacy skills, in both English and Indigenous First Language, that they need to thrive and enjoy life-long learning and success.
This project supports ALNF's belief in creating systemic change and capacity within communities to empower individuals to be their own change makers. Sustaining improved literacy outcomes should not be dependent on the ALNF team working directly with children. Instead, ALNF focuses on working with local community members, to ensure long-term positive outcomes for both adults and children.
