At ALNF, we’re here to create a more inclusive Australia, unlocking authentic potential through the power of literacy and learning.
For many reasons, too many children in marginalised and remote communities do not have access to good quality, engaging books.
That’s why we’re driven by our vision to foster a love of reading and language by providing all children with books and reading materials that fascinate, inspire and delight.
Through our innovative Breakfast Library and Share-A-Book initiatives, so far this year we’ve gifted 14,566 high quality books to little readers across the nation, amplifying literacy outcomes and igniting curiosity and imagination.
Our Share-A-Book program serves as a powerful initiative providing new and pre-loved quality and culturally appropriate books to communities big and small across the nation. With a focus on removing the hurdles of a traditional library, children and families are invited to borrow or keep books and use them in ways that best suit their needs.
Many of the books distributed this year have augmented Share-A-Book libraries in First Nations communities and sites including Palm Island in QLD, Warmun in the Kimberley region of WA, Alice Springs and Darwin in NT, and the Mid North Coast of NSW.
Creating a little home library for families has also proven to foster high levels of parental and community engagement in the literacy learning process, helping to break the cycle of illiteracy and disadvantage.
Our Breakfast Library also continues to go from strength to strength, now supporting an astounding 2,278 children and young people each school term and providing them with a brand-new book every fortnight to call their own.
The program has been a hit, bringing to life an informal learning environment where children are encouraged to enjoy reading in their own way during a healthy breakfast whilst also providing ample opportunities for group read-aloud sessions together with classmates, parents and educators, strengthening the community learning journey.
“When I arrived here... the teachers had not had new books to read for 10 years!!!! The kids had been reading the same books in our guided reading sessions over and over!! AND... they had no books in their classrooms for independent reading to instil the love of, and joy for, reading!!! You have all helped us with this!!! Those beautiful, beautiful books… are further to my quest to get high quality books into these children's hands and get that love of reading happening!!
Reading changes lives!!!! The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation have helped us with this and I can’t thank you enough!!!!!”– Head of Department Teaching and Learning, QLD
We’re ever grateful to you, our incredible supporters. Thank you for being passionate champions of literacy and learning, helping us create real change across Australia.
