Making literacy a reality for every child

By Jasmine Flikier | Communications Director

Did you know that the likelihood of being on track in literacy and numeracy almost doubles if there’s at least one book available in a child’s home?

Thanks to your support, in 2025, we’ve been busier than ever on our mission to increase access to good quality, engaging books for children and young people across some of our most marginalised communities nationwide.

So far this year, we’ve provided 7,149 high quality books to children and communities, with a particular focus on supporting little learners in rural and remote regions such as Palm Island in QLD and Wilcannia in Far West NSW.

“The smile on the students faces when they can take the book home is priceless. It is also amazing to see the students in the playground reading the books with friends during breaks throughout the day, and showing parents when they come to pick them up.”

In one particular highlight, we supplied over 230 engaging and culturally-appropriate books to children in communities across some of northern Queensland’s most remote country. The books have led to a notable impact on children’s literacy and confidence.

“I dropped some books off for a young child and her older sister excitedly saw me the next day – busting with pride, she shared that she had read to her little sister that night – so thanks, they do make a difference!”

Getting more books in homes has not only transformed children’s reading engagement, but has also uplifted families and enhanced opportunities for children and parents to come together to engage in reading activities.

“… the books provided start the conversations with children. They are more likely to pick up and read it because they get to keep it and take home to give to their families. We have families who say that this is the only time their kids will want to read.”

Thank you for standing with us to get more books into kids’ hands and in homes across Australia! Together, we are igniting children’s imaginations, strengthening confidence, and amplifying literacy outcomes so that every child can write their own bright future.
