Green Smart Leaders Program: Inspiring Youth Action for the Environment
From January 30th to February 1st, 2024, the collaboration between YCAB and PT. IMCD culminated in the successful implementation of the Green Smart Leaders (GSL) program, held at two schools: SMK Bina InsanMandiri and YPI Al Huda KebonJeruk. With an outreach to 250 participants from these institutions, the program provided a profound understanding of the importance of environmental awareness and sustainable practices to the younger generation.
The first module, entitled “Waste Management and Sustainable Living,” serves as a foundational cornerstone for participants to comprehend the hazards of disasters, the importance of environmental stewardship, and techniques for waste management and energy conservation. Within this module, students are encouraged to actively engage in observing environmental cleanliness both within the school premises and at home, identifying energy-saving practices, and learning prudent methods for paper usage. Additionally, they are trained to recognize various types of waste and their processing methods, while also being prompted to engage in critical thinking towards mitigating natural disasters resulting from waste and environmental degradation.
Meanwhile, the second module, “Social Enterprise,” delved deeper into understanding climate change, the role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in the workplace, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this module, students were prompted to design recycling projects and apply the principles of 4R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover) in the recycling process of waste and unused items. They were also guided to identify natural disasters resulting from climate change and to become acquainted with inspirational ideas and figures in the field of waste recycling and environmental issues.
Green Smart Leaders program not only imparted theoretical understanding but also provided participants with the opportunity to actively participate in developing real solutions to environmental challenges. Thus, it is hoped that through this program, the younger generation can emerge as future leaders who are environmentally conscious and capable of inspiring positive change within society.
