Summary

The pandemic canceled learning opportunities for many college students & recent graduates. The Council of Korean Americans developed an alternative, virtual career-focused leadership webinar series & e-fellowship program intended to help young Korean Americans from across the country learn professional skills, mentally prepare them for next steps in life, & to think strategically about their career. This summer program will offer webinars, group coaching, mentorship discussion & team projects.

Challenge

Korean Americans are among the fastest-growing & most highly-educated racial groups, representing over 1.8M U.S. citizens. However, the community's growth is not reflected in its representation at the highest levels of leadership. The impact COVID-19 had on internships and job opportunities for students & recent graduates make it even more critical to equip young Korean Americans with the tools they need to advance their skills and increase the visibility, voice, and influence of our community.

Solution

The Summer Leadership program will bridge the learning gap created by recent university course and summer internship cancellations. The Participant's track will offer a series of professional webinars over an 8-week period while the Fellowship track will be an intense 6-week program with weekly webinars and virtual discussion sessions. Both tracks will enhance their soft-skills development, allowing them to be more competitive in the job market and learn how to thrive in a virtual workplace.

Long-Term Impact

Many current college students and recent college graduates are missing vital professional development opportunities, which will leave them at a long-term career disadvantage. As the Korean American community is already underrepresented in key leadership roles across numerous industries, it becomes even more important to ensure that emerging Korean American leaders, like college students and graduates, are well-equipped for their next professional steps and to advance our collective potential.
