Women Leaders in Technology (WLiT) firmly believes that women can and should hold leadership positions in computer technology. We offer a nine-month fellowship program for university-level IT students identifying as women. Every year, 15 participants get selected through an open call to join this multifaceted career development program focusing on technology, leadership, and community in Kathmandu. With your support, we can add cohort of 15 participants in the city of Pokhara.
Women make up 49.5%, yet as of 2023 women hold only 26.7% of jobs in technology globally. In Nepal where the female population is 52.15%, this trend is even more disheartening. According to the latest report from The Asia Foundation, even though 81% of female over the age of 15 are contributing to the economy, only 0.5% of women are in technology. It is essential to have more women in tech so that they can contribute to their communities and make impactful change at all levels as leaders.
WLiT's fellowship equips women with technical and leadership skills to prepare them for careers in tech through workshops, internships, mentorships, and community impact projects. We reach students in a critical phase, transforming their view of what is possible in their life and career. We also create mentors and role models for the next generation by investing intensively in a small group of passionate girls. Many fellows become trainers, mentors, and leaders of new technical initiatives.
Technology that is not designed by all, will never be good for all. By investing in young women, we support them to become leaders and create more equitable outcomes for all. So far, we have completed 8 fellowships directly impacting 144 young women, of which 88% have established careers in tech and 20% are in decision-making roles. We added 1 program to the city of Pokhara, to reach more under-served populations. With more support, we can double our programs and impact outside of Kathmandu.
