Over the past few months, Evergreen Center for Sustainable Development has continued to advance our GlobalGiving project, Empowering 10,000 Migrant Children in China, by expanding community-based Children’s Homes and strengthening social-emotional learning support for migrant and left-behind children. One key milestone during this period was the opening of a new Children’s Home in Pingshui Village, Dafang County, Guizhou Province. Before the space was established, many children lacked a safe and stable place to go after school. Today, renovated classrooms provide activity rooms, reading spaces, and shared learning areas where children can experience emotional safety, build peer relationships, and gradually develop self-awareness and trust through consistent interaction with social workers. During the same period, the Children’s Home in Dawang Village, Anxin County, Hebei Province also officially began operating, offering daily companionship and structured activities that support children’s emotional expression and sense of belonging.
Across different cities, Children’s Homes continued to promote children’s social and emotional development through experiential learning. In Beijing, children participated in an animal welfare–themed community event that encouraged empathy, perspective-taking, and responsibility through creative workshops, group games, and role-play. These activities helped children recognize emotions in themselves and others while practicing cooperation in a supportive environment. In Tianjin, a public-interest study tour at Jiulong Mountain brought together migrant children, disadvantaged children, and children from welfare institutions for nature exploration, environmental practice, and reflective writing. Through shared challenges and guided reflection, children strengthened emotional regulation, confidence, and positive peer interaction in unfamiliar settings.
Community-based engagement remained central to sustaining social-emotional growth. In Shanghai’s Jiading District, the Shengzhu Community Children’s Home hosted a themed open day that highlighted children’s progress in communication, collaboration, and creative expression through interactive booths focused on reading, art, teamwork, and parent-child interaction. Summer childcare programs and bilingual creative camps further provided stable daily routines during school breaks, helping children build a sense of predictability and emotional security. With the steady presence of trained social workers and volunteers, children were supported in expressing feelings, navigating peer relationships, and developing resilience through everyday interactions.
These developments are made possible by the continued support of our donors. Your contributions help create safe environments and caring relationships where children can practice emotional awareness, social skills, and resilience. Through Empowering 10,000 Migrant Children in China, we are not only providing physical spaces, but also strengthening long-term systems of social-emotional support that help children face challenges, build confidence, and grow with stability. Thank you for walking alongside us in this journey.
