Challenge

The war in South Sudan has forced over a million people into refugee camps in Uganda. UNHCR records 120,150 refugees in Palorinya settlement in Uganda. Also that 42% of the 30,400 households are headed by single women and girls for many men were either killed or are in the conflict. Whereas emergency Relief has been rendered, women and Teen mothers who head households are at risk of poverty and dependence. This project empowers 300 household head women and girls with sustainable livelihoods.

Solution

RUFIT is empowering 300 most vulnerable women and girls with Vocational skills and capacity building through life skills, entrepreneurship skills, sensitisation in Trauma healing skills and the knowledge of their rights and how to claim and protect their rights. So far we have trained 50 single women and Teen mothers in Tailoring and weaving skills. They need start-up kits to begin Tailoring shops for Income Generating Activity through supply of school uniforms in the refugee settlements.

Long-Term Impact

By providing skills training and start-up Kits, the 300 women and girls engage in sustainable economic activities and improve their standards of living. They will overcome stress and trauma and work themselves out of poverty and be able to provide for their families' and live in harmony within the settlement and with the host community around them. They become a resilient community facing life with confidence and dignity, contributing to the Ugandan economy and of their country upon returning
