Challenge

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in September 2017, Culebra and Vieques, two municipal islands in the north-eastern region, suffered the lack of energy for more than a year. Power generators had been providing the source to maintain electricity in the island with an unprecedented elevated cost and with a negative impact to the environment.

Solution

The Puerto Rico Community Foundation (PRCF) proposes to transform Culebra's energy system into a renewable system with a two-phase scalable approach: 1) develop a micro-grid network for energy and storage generation to support Culebra's business and non-profit sector and; 2) provide distributed solar energy generation and storage system to support essential services facilities (health, security, among others).

Long-Term Impact

Culebra will become the first (1st) island in America to have a renewable energy infrastructure. The proposed project will provide a more robust and resilient energy infrastructure, uninterrupted services and year-long economy on energy costs. It will also lower the cost of doing business for Culebrenses.
