Transforming lives: The impact of the Girls' Club

By Amira Lozada | Technical communication coordinator

The girls' club meets weekly at Socio Vivienda 2, one of the most dangerous places in Guayaquil. The girls who participate are between 12 and 20 years old and are worried about their future due to insecurity in the area where they grow up. They are very happy to be part of this club and stated that they do not want to end up married or having children in their teens. They are also concerned that they may be subject to abuse or become involved in criminal gangs, since they stalk them to “make them fall in love.” Girls recognize some risks to which they are exposed and that is why they want to improve themselves.

The main problems that were identified by the girls, through their life plan, were academic gaps, low self-esteem and difficulties in communication. These three major difficulties mainly limit them from staying in the educational system. Within this plan they visualize their future and discuss their hopes and dreams, for example, whether they want to study, work, get married or live alone, and how they plan to achieve this. Part of the discussions they have had have addressed the issues of preventing teenage pregnancy and relationships. Additionally, guidance has been given to girls regarding the choice of university majors. Vocational guidance has been provided so that they have a clearer idea of what they would like to study.

Communication difficulties are closely linked to low self-esteem, which is why we are currently beginning to intervene in this poor appreciation that girls have of themselves. Activities such as the “Mirror” technique are carried out, which generates a feeling of introspection and identification in the girls. They had to see their reflection and express what they liked about what they saw and what they did not. One of the girls in the group didn't want to do the activity and started crying because she didn't like looking in the mirror. Another girl admitted that she didn't like her nails and hair and that she had various problems, but decisively she said that she is able to solve them while looking in the mirror. In other sessions, body expression and communication skills were worked on. The girls expressed that the club is a refuge for them because they feel strong and safe. It was identified that the best way to work with them is through games and activities that let them feel free, such as dancing and singing.
