Empowering Girls and Women as Mothers

Thank you so much for being a part of our success story! Thank you so much for assisting our children to have a hope and a dream to work towards.

Today I want to introduce you to Lidani, a young man who has been in our program since 2020. When you read his story you will be amazed at how quickly he has changed his behaviour and how lasting the change has been. Now I know, you are supporting Girls and Women as Mothers however, they would not become mothers without boys/men. Our program deals specifically with teaching boys and men to respect girls and women, to reduce teenage pregnancy, and unwanted pregnancy, and reduce Gender-Based Violence. So it is essential to work with both boys and girls, men and women.

If you are new to KTD196 you may not realise that over the last 19yrs that we have been operating we have produced Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Acturalists, Chartered Accountants, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, and Biological Engineers, Pharmacists, as well as various tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, boiler makers, etc. It is a privilege to see these children realise their dreams through KTD196. None of this would be possible without you! You make this happen. Without KTD196 and the programs we run, none of these children (remember we work with the poorest of the poor from the poorest villages and schools) or perhaps maybe the odd child, would achieve their dreams and often not even have dreams.

You are the catalyst.

My name is Lidani I am 15 years old. I started scouts in 2020 I am from Myakayaka village.

Before I joined scouts, I was under the influence of peer pressure doing all the wrongs things in life. I started having relationships with girls, not knowing the effects of dating at the young age. I didnt even consider about being a teenage dad or the impact it would have on my girl friend. I was very ignorant about HIV as well. I now understand and realise that it would short circuit my future, my girl friends future and my child. I would have to leave school and try to get a job which is very difficult especially because my mother is a refugee from Mozambique and none of us have ID documents.

I also never knew that animals are friendly all they need is care and love and safety, I used to throw sticks and stones at animals and beat them because I was afraid. I was not loyal or kind to other people, I would treat people very badly and I would often bully my younger siblings and be cruel to others.

Since joining scouts, I am now a changed person learning all the scout laws and promises made me a better human being I am now responsible and trustworthy leader. I have started to like animals and now understand and take good care of them in a friendly manner. I also have learned to respect myself. We have learnt about ABC Abstinance, Be Faithful and Condomise through KTD196 but I have chosen to Abstain and Be Faithful to myself, I no longer have girl friends, that way I can work towards my future without fear of becoming a father early.

What I enjoy in scouts is we learn adventures things about nature, how to take care of our climate,  going to camp on school holidays is the best experiences of true adventure and learning in a different fun way. Living in the village is dangerous, there are a lot of criminals and violence, coming to camp I can relax and enjoy. It is tiring at camp because we are doing a lot and learning a lot of knew things but the stress of violence isnt there.

What I have learned since joining KTD196 is I have learned to love myself and be truthful, loyal to others. We learned about Sir Robert Baden Powell who started scouts in his country. Purifying of water is most exciting because in the village water is difficult to come by and often we have to go to the river, so do the animals, and other people use the river as a toilet so by learning how to purify water my family does not get sick. I now know hygiene is important in our life. In addition, how to care of our natural things like trees birds and animals, we need to protect nature and care for it, not distroy it.

In future, I want to be a medical doctor because many people in my community are struggling for health care. In addition, my dream is to be able to run my own private practice to help people.

I am still in scouts because I want to reach to the top award position in scouts while learning and developing my skills while having fun in every lesson. Thank you for making that possible

My name is Nyiko and I am 10 years old. I started scouts in 2018 I am from Sedan village.

Before I joined scouts I was a naughty disrespectful boy, I used to steal people's things and I did not know how to play with other children I would beat them every time when we are all together in the playground and I would bully them and make funny jokes about them. At school, my teachers were always complaining because I was always making noise in class and disturb their lessons.

Since joining scouts, I am now a very respectful person and I no longer bully other children I have change because of KTD196 scouts. They teach us to love everyone and make friends and behave well around anyone and keep your promise to yourself and your duty to others in return for good.

What do you enjoy about scouts? Playing games, having fun while learning important issues in our lives. In addition, how we can protect our planet we draw awesome pictures and paint them with lovely rainbow colors.

What have you learned since joining scouts? I have learn to respect everyone no matter their age and to listen when they teach us at school or at home, play with other children in a good manner and we learned how to purify water for clean drinking water and how to take care of our planet and to love ourselves.

What do you want to do in future and why? I want become a lawyer because we need justice in the community and protection and law enforcement when it comes to women and children’s rights many are still suffering due to lack of no one to take a stand for them or hear their voice.

Why are you still in scouts? Am learning more about life and my future, it inspires me to be a good example to other children and am reaching my dreams for a better future because of scouts.
