In Costa Rica, due to the culture and socially imposed roles, women only cover less than 10% of the total space in STEAM degrees. If we get them to see themselves reflected in activities related to innovation and technology careers from a young age, we can start a movement to reduce the gender gap in career choice and the job market. Ninas Hacia El Espacio program uses the game to promote the involvement of girls in Costa Rica in STEAM areas. With your support we can make it possible.
Women are much less likely to be enrolled in STEAM areas. Women still represent only 28% of those with a bachelor's degree in engineering and 40% in computer science; in fields such as AI, only 1 in 5 professionals is female. Between the ages of 5 and 10, interests begin to develop more strongly, but depending on gender stereotypes and the environment in which girls develop, they may begin to associate their futures with careers related to caring for and being responsible for others.
Ninas hacia el espacio program is intended to provide the community with a series of knowledge, tutoring, mentoring and guidance to develop young girls the skills in critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, communication, logical reasoning and problem solving, in order to educate them from an early age in fields of study where women are not usually seen, all this with the help of the families.
The inclusion of girls in programs that encourage critical thinking, creativity and problem solving from an early age can contribute to the reduction of gender biases and prejudices that prevent women from accessing STEAM careers. This change would influence the reduction of obstacles that are created not only in the workplace, but also in the perspectives of families and academic centers about what a woman should or should not do.
