To meet one of the greatest needs in Afghanistan - to help women - GHNI teams will launch empowerment centers to provide training and opportunities to produce and sell handicrafts. We will also teach women how to plant and nurture a family garden. This allows the women to provide diverse vegetables to feed their children healthy meals. We have one center where women have been meeting and they are seeing great success in growing food and earning an income. GHNI will be adding 2 centers!
Women in Afghanistan, especially in rural areas are often oppressed by poverty. Poverty has been exacerbated by war and destruction. Rebuilding this country has been in the hearts of its citizens and many families are making progress. Many have lost hope. Women have minimal access to education, training, and work. Children are cared for by these mothers and spend much time with them. Educating women, then educates children and changes the future for communities.
These centers will provide needed training to bring income through handicrafts, sewing garments, and important household needs. We have trainers available to lead discussions, offer assistance, provide sewing machines and other tools, as well as lead families in planting small kitchen gardens. When healthy food is available, bodies are stronger. Children remain healthier to attend school, men are able to work and women can meet to create items for sale. This cycle leads to stability.
As the years' pass, families will build on the foundation of women being educated to earn an income and grow healthy food. Families will increase abilities over the years and extreme poverty will be squelched for generations to come. Educated women will teach children to continue with learning and encourage them to eat healthy foods, which in turn, leads to adults who raise healthy children and educate their children.
