Challenge

Above 80% of a marginalized group, "Abatwa" live in chronic poverty with different negative consequences (effects) secondary to chronic poverty such as malnutrition, hygiene-related diseases, infectious diseases and low education level. The Abatwa's educational level remains the lowest and the dropout rate the highest in Rwanda. According to the survey conducted by COPORWA, only34%Batwa had attended school, less than 1% secondary school and no one had completed higher education.

Solution

The project provide social and educational support for the children from nursery to secondary (provision of education materials for children: children's books, notebooks, pens and school clothes). The project will create Batwa vocational associations not only provide high-quality education but also use experiential learning methods to teach Batwa young people about ancient cultural practices, traditional art, and music. Batwa group will be empowered through income generation micro-projects.

Long-Term Impact

This project will help teens avoid the risks of unplanned pregnancy, social isolation, depression, and low self-esteem that are common in this group. Successful participation in a vocational-skill-building process will give these young minds a chance to stretch and blossom as adults. Abatwa will be empowered socially, economically, and in health. They will be able to access basic life opportunities, basic needs, and primary health care services as well as make decisions for small investments.
