Dear Donors,
We are grateful for your interest in and support of the Abatwa Empowerment Project, an initiative designed to uplift one of Rwanda’s most marginalized indigenous communities through integrated social, health, and economic interventions. The overall goal of this three-year project is to empower approximately 1,000 Abatwa by expanding access to education, strengthening livelihoods, and improving overall well-being. Through education support, literacy programs, vocational skills development, and income-generation micro-projects, the project seeks to create sustainable pathways out of poverty.
Today, more than 80% of the Abatwa live in chronic poverty, facing serious challenges including malnutrition, hygiene-related and infectious diseases, and extremely limited educational opportunities. According to a survey conducted by COPORWA, only 34% of Abatwa have ever attended school, less than 1% have reached secondary education, and none have completed higher education. As a result, dropout rates are the highest in the country, reinforcing intergenerational poverty and social exclusion.
To address these challenges, the project provides direct social and educational support to children from nursery through secondary school, including learning materials such as books, notebooks, pens, and school clothing. Basic literacy training in reading and writing is offered to out-of-school youth and parents, ensuring that entire families benefit. In addition, Batwa vocational associations are being established to combine high-quality skills training with experiential learning rooted in ancient cultural practices, traditional art, and music. These efforts are complemented by income-generation micro-projects that enable households to build resilience and economic independence.
The long-term impact of this project extends beyond education and income. By engaging adolescents in structured learning and vocational pathways, the project helps reduce the risks of unplanned pregnancy, social isolation, depression, and low self-esteem. Young participants gain confidence, practical skills, and a vision for their future, allowing them to transition into adulthood with dignity and purpose. Over time, the Abatwa community will be empowered socially, economically, and in health, with improved access to basic needs, primary health care services, and informed decision-making for small investments.
The total project budget is $30,000. To date, $789 has been raised from two generous donors, leaving a remaining funding gap of $29,211. Your continued partnership is essential to achieving lasting change. Together, we can ensure that the Abatwa gain access to education, opportunity, and a more hopeful future.
With sincere appreciation,
Jean Damascen Uwizeyimana
