Dear Patrons,
We would like to present a brief report on the project “Empowerment for Indigenous People: Batwa in Rwanda.” The overall goal of this initiative is to empower the Batwa community through integrated social, health, and economic interventions. The project targets approximately 1,000 Batwa individuals, aiming to improve access to education, enhance socio-economic conditions, and support personal talent development through income-generating micro-projects. It also includes basic literacy training in reading and writing for out-of-school youth and parents.
We regret to report that the project has not fully achieved its intended goals due to insufficient funding. Financial limitations have affected the full implementation of key activities, including educational support, vocational training, and micro-project development. Despite these challenges, we remain fully committed to continuing the project and mobilizing resources to ensure its successful implementation.
The Batwa community continues to face severe socio-economic challenges. Over 80% live in chronic poverty, which contributes to malnutrition, poor hygiene, increased risk of infectious diseases, and low levels of education. The community also has the lowest educational attainment in Rwanda, with the highest dropout rates. According to a COPORWA survey, only 34% of Batwa individuals have attended school, less than 1% reach secondary education, and none have completed higher education.
To address these challenges, the project is designed to provide comprehensive support. This includes educational assistance for children from nursery to secondary school through the provision of learning materials such as books, notebooks, pens, and school uniforms. It also involves the establishment of vocational associations to equip Batwa youth with practical skills while promoting cultural heritage through traditional arts, music, and experiential learning. In addition, the project supports income-generating micro-projects and provides basic literacy programs for out-of-school youth and adults.
In the long term, this project is expected to significantly improve the lives of the Batwa people by reducing social risks such as teenage pregnancy, depression, and social isolation. It will strengthen vocational skills, enhance self-reliance, and improve access to education, healthcare, and basic needs. Ultimately, it will empower the Batwa community to participate more fully in society and make informed economic and social decisions.
We sincerely appreciate your continued support and partnership in making this vision a reality.
Sincerely,
Project Team – Empowerment for Indigenous People (Batwa in Rwanda)
