BTF's Empowerment Scholarships Program supports educating and empowering girls from underserved regions in Turkiye. We are imagining equal opportunities for all genders in life, equal decision-making power for everybody, and that every child has the right to an education. Turkey is located in a prominent geographic position between Europe and Asia. Access to education has been a challenge for millions of girls who live in remote areas of the country. Despite the Turkish government's efforts, many girls in Turkey still do not have the opportunity to receive an education. Moreover, large number of girls continue to drop out of school. It is estimated that of the 30 percent of incoming female students at universities, 40 percent drop out due to economic hardship.
BTF provides scholarships primarily to girls because cycles of poverty and illiteracy can be broken in just one generation. Providing educational opportunities are key to combatting early marriage, illiteracy, school dropout, and low wages, which are common barriers faced by many Turkish girls as they try to receive an education. Providing education will make a difference now and for generations to come, giving women greater educational and economic opportunities to strengthen their communities.
BTF has empowered more than 5,721 students through educational scholarships given primarily to disadvantaged girls. Through GlobalGiving, we have the potential to reach 10,000 girls! These scholarships make a difference in encouraging low-income families to keep their daughters in school and help them create better futures for themselves, their families and communities. As the economic barrier is removed, cycles of poverty will be broken for generations to come.
