Voices of Bridge to Turkiye Fund Scholars from CYDD Cayyolu Umitkoy Branch

By Nurgul Dogan | Project Leader

Dear Friends,

Scholarships are crucial for students from low-income backgrounds to afford higher education. That education is a potential ticket out of poverty for those who complete their degrees. Your support provides life changing opportunities to students for building better futures for themselves, their families, and communities. That means scholarships matter now more than ever.

In the 2019-2020 academic year, there is an increase in applications for college scholarship. Many college students are struggling to continue their education. College tuition, accommodation, transportation, books, school supplies and other rising costs are a hindrance to students' education. Your support to the BTF scholarship program will help scholars overcome their financial difficulties, achieve their goals related to their education and reduce risk of dropping out their schools.

We are grateful to our generous global giving donors, like you for supporting our BTF Empowerment Scholarships Program.BTF collaborates with distinguished NGO partners and foundations established by important universities.  Association for Supporting Contemporary Life (CYDD) is one of our most significant partners. The association is aiming to reach contemporary society via contemporary education for contemporary people. It has 103 branch offices that help girls across Turkey obtain an education, ultimately promoting gender equality.

Bridge to Turkiye Fund supports 38 CYDD branch offices. One of them is CYDD Cayyolu Umitkoy branch office in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. As a result of your strong support and generous donations, BTF was able to make a difference to the lives of 53 college students through CYDD Cayyolu Umitkoy. The branch provided scholarship to 350 students from 16 different universities in 2018-2019 Academic Year.

We would like to share with you examples of how BTF scholarship program help students tackle the challenges of their lives and how their dreams come true in Ankara.

Aspiring Engineer: “After my parents divorced, I started to live alone. I'm preparing myself for the future. I concentrated on my classes. I do sports and I am interested in mosaic art. I'm reluctantly selling mosaics that I've made because of financial difficulties. It is very difficult to work in a place and go from place to place due to the busy schedule of my classes. I try to be a better person in the future than to be a good engineer. I want to create, design, research and develop to make life easier. I would like to work in the research and development department to make beneficial projects for the society and to provide scholarships to those in need as you do.”

Aspiring Teacher: “I have been studying special education at university. I've done all my work myself as long as I can remember. My parents divorced when I was little. My mother wasn't with us so I had to take care of my younger brother. While I was in elementary school, I lived in a poor neighborhood. Since the electricity is cut too often, I studied my lessons under candlelight.

I've wanted to be a teacher ever since I was a little kid. After graduating from university I want to attend to the master program. My primary goal is to make an academic career. Then I want to give a girl a scholarship to continue her education.”

Aspiring Psychologist: “I've been studying psychology at university for three years. In the future, after graduating, I want to do research on neuropsychology and neuroscience and finish my master's degree in clinical psychology in English. I would like to focus on psychopathology and want to enlighten the mysteries of the brain. I would like to do distinguished works for the whole world and this country that Ataturk founded with the advancement of science.

I want to be both an academic and a clinical psychologist. It has been a big dream since high school to be able to help by solving the problems of those who have problems in life. I will do my best to achieve my goals. This is a promise I make to both myself and to everyone who supports me in this way.”

Aspiring Doctor: “This is my fourth year at a medical school.
I've been on scholarship for two years. First of all, I would like to thank BTF and ÇYDD for providing me this scholarship. Thanks to this scholarship, I had the opportunity to receive the materials I used in my education. I had the opportunity to participate national and international congresses, conferences, symposiums and so on. It would have been impossible for me to get an opportunity to develop myself if I didn't have a scholarship.
I made new friends in the different activities and learned a lot from many people personally. I would like to thank all the people, institutions and organizations involved in this interaction which is very important to me in my life.”

Providing access to education through scholarships is increasingly important, as you support students in realizing their dreams and reaching their fullest potentials. Your donations to BTF EmpowermentScholarships not only provide financial support for our students' educations, but they are also an investment in their futures. Let’s light the path to education, even one supporter can make a life-changing impact on a student.

 Best regards,

BTF Scholars
