This year we aim at Zero Death and Zero Cholera

Community awareness about best Hygiene Habits among Internally Displaced Persons,Refugees and Host Communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo in general and in Kalemie and Kinshasa Cities in particular.

Here are our activities

Individual visits to homes of vulnerable people in the Communities: People with Disabilities, Unaccompagnied children, Elderly people, the sick and poor women.

Community Messages: At least twice per week with a loud Speaker, we do move in most Communities at High Risks,

Community Meetings: Once per month we have one community meeting among people at high risk of Cholera and other Diseases.

Campaigns: One a month we move in Roads, Markets and in some Churches in order to circulate the message.

With the number of Internally Displaced Persons in Eastern DRCongo who are left without relief aid and refugees who also face the same situation.

Diseases like Malaria and Cholera are the leading problems among the war victims on their run and in their host communities. The number of deaths continue to rise up and people have no clear information about the diseases. Sometimes they attribute them to witchcraft, punishment from God and to bad spirits.

Our team of volunteers on ground have tried their best to share information during community awareness meetings, we hope this has saved some especially those who we managed to meet. The work is huge and the victims in thousands but our team members are just either two or three people.

In Kalemie, at least in each two weeks we have one information session among war victims in different camps, we do select a camp, we also select the audience basing on vulnerability and age, and then mobilize people to come for the meeting.

Our motivation is based on our conviction “we may not save all people but the few we will save will still be the foundation of the humanity in their communities”.

As per now the result is positive and Cholera is fully managed in the Kalemie and in Kinshasa.

Support community initiative to bring water

One local water drilling to provide only for few

Still people in various parts of Kalemie City do not have access to clean water in order to survive Cholera

The Democratic Republic of Congo Government liberalized the Water sector and this gave opportunity for the private sector to invest in water, however in Kalemie city there are still very actors investing in the water production industry.

Lack of access to clean water is very first cause of Cholera which has claimed lives in Kalemie. The very existing local initiatives are based on water drilling which also highly depend on the availability of the electricity which is also not always there.

In Kankomba Avenue for example there are only two water drilling stations which offer water to more than 3,000 people. Here in order to get water, you may spend at least 4 to 5 hours per day. Women are more particularly the most victims because they have no time to engage in income generating activities because most of their time is used on looking for water.

We have not yet made a progress in this campaign in order to provide people with water and the situation is not good because the period for Cholera outbreak is soon coming.

The only private water Drilling in Kankomba

The picture below if the only water drilling which produces water for few people, we visited this initiative and the owner told" I started this initiative when I saw how my wife and the children were suffering in order to get water, they could wake up at 4am just to look for water and what they will get will not be enough for the whole family. Now I opted to also share it with people in this place and as you can see it is the only one here. We can only produce 5,000 Ml of water as per now which is not enough enough, there is a high demand but I'm not able to offer people water, I have tried to invest what I had in this, I know it is not yet enough but that is what I was able to do.

I have yes the desire to do more, and invest more in this water drilling so that I can offer all people water in this avenue but I do not have the necessary money which can help to do what I need to do, may other people should also do sometung so that we can solve this problem. But if you give me more money I can improve and people will be happy here"

Awareness during the vaccination against Cholera

Supporting the government in its vaccination program to combat Cholera in Kalemie

In July 2025 as cases of people affected by Cholera increased in many parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the government came up with the vaccination program which is still running in some parts.

The Cholera vaccination program targeted all people and the city of Kalemie was among the beneficiaries. We joined the DRC Government by awareness among people especially as there always suspicions about vaccination. We helped people in various communities to access accurate information and reduce the spread of fake news.

We also shared information with the health workers about vulnerable communities at risk and followed up to ensure that they were also included. The communities are composed of refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, undocumented migrants who live in hiding and sex workers among others. Good enough most of them accessed the vaccinations and this has so far reduced cases of Cholera in Kalemie City.

However, not all people were vaccinated and still there are areas where the health workers did not reach and people are still at risk in these place.

We also know that issues about Hygiene are the key in order to control and end Cholera and this also includes access to clean water. As per now refugees and IDPs do not have access to clean water in their camps, actually one among the problems they have now is the lack of water. We also know that we need to create strong awareness among people about hygiene at home, public places, restaurants, put in place public toilets, and focus on the management of the wastage in many parts of Kalemie currently.

We are still having the opportunity now because we are in dry season but in less than one month we are starting the raining season from September and this will crease Cholera cases.

That is why we still need your support at least to reduce the risks.
