Hello GlobalGiving Supporters of End of Land,
Thank you again for your donation to our project. We're writing at the moment with our quarterly GlobalGiving update.
Thanks to the generous support of our GlobalGiving community -- as well as our funders the International Documentary Association and the Sundance Institute -- our team has been continuing our research and creative development work on our documentary film, End of Land.
Most notably, our research has revealed continued devastating impacts of our warming world on the Yamal Peninsula. For example, a recent Russian scientific expedition uncovered more exploded methane deposits that formed craters throughout the region as a result of permafrost thaw. One CNN article detailing the alarming phenomenon states: "Permafrost is a huge natural reservoir of methane, a potent greenhouse gas much more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat and warming the planet. Warmer summers -- the Arctic is warming two times faster than the global average -- have weakened the permafrost layer, which acts as a cap, making it easier for gas to escape. Some experts estimate that soils in the permafrost region hold twice as much carbon as the atmosphere does, making the region extremely important in the fight against climate change.”
And just last month, Russian tankers -- for the first time in history -- were able to travel from China through the North Sea to the Siberian port city Sabetta. The usual sea ice that historically had blocked this route is still thick, but is thinning enough to move through. Not only is this a sign of the climate crisis, but further will open up a new channel for the further exploitation and transportation of petrochemicals in the Yamal Peninsula.
We will continue this research, as well as ethnographic research with our Russian collaborators to further learn more about potential storylines to follow, the impacts of our global climate crisis as well as how the pandemic is affecting life in Yamal. With their expertise, we are beginning to craft a potential new production plan for shooting the film. It is our hope that we will be able to scout and shoot this fall and launch into production in earnest in Spring 2022.
We will look forward to continuing our work with our collaborators, as well as fundraising and sharpening our creative vision for sharing this important story.
