Gita, challenging taboos

By Sophie Stephens | Digital Fundraiser

Gita, a forty-year-old woman from Bajura, faced restrictive menstrual practices within her community. Her mother-in-law enforced rigorous rules, confining her to a separate room during her period. Gita experienced discrimination, as she was scolded by other women for fetching water during her period.

However, Gita's life changed when she encountered a social mobilizer from Green Tara Nepal, one of our partner organisations. The mobiliser educated women about healthy menstruation practices and provided hygiene supplies, such as sanitary pads, soap, and nail cutters. These supplies are considered a luxury in their village.

Gita learned about menstrual hygiene, debunked period myths and felt determined in challenging traditional beliefs, reducing discriminative views surrounding periods. Gita's mother-in-law, part of a mother group facilitated by Green Tara Nepal, also made positive changes. She started treating Gita differently during her period, allowing her to consume milk, which has previously been restricted and no longer confined her to a separate room.

Gita's mother-in-law started to become a role model in their community by making sanitary pads for everyone!

By challenging taboos and providing essential resources, organisations like Green Tara Nepal play a vital role in women’s equity in society and promoting positive changes in long-standing attitudes, particularly towards menstruation. The project is working towards an environment of acceptance and support for women's health.
