It takes a village...

By Soph Stephens | Digital Fundraiser

Bhim Badur Thapa, a healer with 29 years of experience, shared his insights on the evolving perspectives regarding Chhaupadi, a practice of untouchability during menstruation. He noted that strict adherence to this practice was primarily due to a lack of hygiene and education in the past. However, he observed a shift in attitudes following an enlightening trip to Pokhara with fellow priests and healers. There, they were exposed to different cultures and practices, including the absence of Chhaupadi, which broadened their understanding.

Thapa emphasised the importance of supporting women, especially since societal norms are born from women’s roles. He highlighted the progress in his village, where women no longer have to isolate themselves in sheds but can stay within their homes during menstruation without any adverse effects on the community or livestock.

Despite resistance from some healers who cling to old beliefs, Thapa advocates for change, believing that true worship involves caring for people, particularly women. He supports allowing women to consume dairy products and remain in their homes during their menstrual cycle.

Thapa remains hopeful for continued progress, envisioning a future where outdated practices are replaced with more compassionate and inclusive customs.

Thanks to your support of this project more girls and women are free from menstrual exile.
