Growing up, Anisha witnessed and received the isolation from the practice of "Chhaupadi", a tradition that discriminates against menstruating women due to beliefs about impurity, they are often isolated to outside sheds and prevented from engaging in any activities.
Through her involvement with a women's group supported by our partner organisation, Anisha gained knowledge about menstrual health and women's rights. She became an advocate for change, engaging with local initiatives aimed at abolishing harmful practices like Chhaupadi.
Anisha's journey of transformation began at home. She courageously initiated conversations with her mother and mother-in-law, challenging long-held beliefs. Her efforts bore fruit as her family became more supportive, allowing her to stay comfortably at home during menstruation. She is no longer denied nutritious foods like fruits, curds and milk during her period, which is one of the most firmly rooted practices during menstruation.
While Anisha has made significant progress, some cultural barriers remain. She still feels uncomfortable visiting holy places and temples during menstruation, highlighting the deep-rooted nature of these beliefs. However, she now has her own room where she can stay comfortably, even beyond her menstruation days, marking a significant shift in her family's attitudes. This is no small feat.
Anisha's story demonstrates the importance of engaging entire communities in the process of change. By working with women like Anisha, as well as their families and wider community members, we can create lasting transformations that improve women's health, dignity, and opportunities.
Your support enables us to continue empowering young women like Anisha, helping them challenge harmful traditions and create positive change in their communities. Together, we're working towards a future where all women in Nepal can live with dignity and respect, free from discriminatory practices.
