GROWING AND LEARNING

GIRL FROM YO'ONIK NURSERY, ZINACANTAN

This time we would love to share with you one month in the life of our team and the jungle projects. You'll see that in order to achieve our work we have to diversify and attend to different needs.

Na-Bolom’s nursery project(s) in the selva jungle region produced substantial progress during the month of January.  Even though the students were on vacation during this month,  they maintained the nurseries and stayed focused on project goals.   Via What’s App, Na-Bolom staff remained in close contact with the students and communities, demonstrating the importance of working in a shared, inclusive and integrated manner. Work plans and updates were circulated on a regular basis among all parties.

Field visits and work accomplished included the following:
January 3:  Creation of work plans, agendas, and personal responsibilities for each site.
January 4:  Identification and mediation of land for nurseries near the selva/jungle zone in Benemerito.
January 5:  Visit the nursery of Robert Barrios. Activities included irrigation and weeding of trees on the perimeter of the nursery.
January 6-8:  Field visit to the Lacandon community of Naja to collect seeds and monitor progress. Introduce the new staff to the community. We accompany Chef Heriberto Flores who is doing a project on recuperation of lacandon gastronomy. During the visit, we continued with the seeds bank work.
January 9:  Monitoring visit to the nursery in Tres Laguna, weeding and irrigation according to Pablo’s instructions.
January 10:  Visit the Benemerito’s elementary school for a workshop and discussion about the possible installation of a nursery for the children.  This is another demonstration of our goal to include different (or perhaps multiple?) generations.
January 11-13:  Finished construction of the nursery at Benemerito’s secondary technical school.  Delivered brief induction workshops to the students.
January 14:  Completed weeding at Benemerito’s new nursery.
January 19:  Seed collection from different sites in Benemerito.
January 23:  Visit to Zamora Pico de Oro for seed collection.
January 24:  Visit to Emiliano Zapato to weed the perimeter of the nursery.
General activities which were realized/completed in each Cobach location included:
-  seed collection
-  soil collection
-  installation of posts
-  plant sorting
-  weeding and irrigation of plants
-  field walks to collect samples and materials
-  nursery weeding
-  attached please find a google folder for full documentation of January 2023
    activities.
As you can see we take advantage of every visit to do more than one thing and the projects are growing together. We also received Martin and Violeta from Argentina who gave workshops on how to do toys with recycled materials their project is called Desfabrica. Kids who participate with us in the seeds bank project took the workshop and had a great time playing with their homemade toys.
Please become a monthly donor and help us continue with this work.
