The Roma people of Serbia have long experienced oppression and have suffered for generations in poverty. The community of Dorgovska Mahala are determined to rise above this extreme poverty and build a stronger future for their children. To do this, they simply need a little help and boosting to ensure they will be successful in finding solutions to the issues contributing toward poverty.
In Serbia, the Roma people have historically experienced oppression and poverty. Generations ago, the Roma immigrated from India to find freedom and to build a better future. Unfortunately, they were again met with difficulties. In the Mahala we serve, the people are working together to end poverty and build a strong future for their children. Immediate needs include filters to extract the chemicals and minerals from their water, and the knowledge to grow food in very small spaces.
Access to clean, safe water will bring better health. After a health assessment on the village recently, we learned they are not drinking water because it is expensive to buy bottled water and their available water source is filled with minerals and chemicals. Filters will alleviate the need to buy water by providing safe clean water directly to the village. Growing vegetables was another concern. Costly to purchase, they must grow vegetables in very small spaces to access to healthy food.
Greater health builds stronger bodies prepared for work and for education. When this community feels better due to healthier habits, children will do better in school and income will rise from the ability to work more often. Once these basic needs are met, we can launch into training resulting in income generating businesses and jobs, leading into a strong future for this community.
