In rural Uganda, the Robert Brierley Memorial Community Centre provides training, education and outreach to local families, but frequent grid outages cut its activities short every day. We are raising $40,000 to install a solar and battery system so the centre can generate and store its own power, extend its services into the evening, and offer digital skills training, electric sewing equipment and safe, well-lit spaces after dark.
The Robert Brierley Memorial Community Centre in Nkuringo, Uganda, provides vocational training, education and outreach to local families bordering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. But the national grid is out for five or more hours a day, sometimes a full day. Activities stop well before evening, and services that need consistent power, like digital training, electric sewing machines and medicine refrigeration, remain out of reach. The centre has the programmes but lacks the infrastructure.
We will install a solar panel and battery storage system at the centre. Solar panels will generate electricity during the day, and batteries will store surplus energy for evening and overnight use. The system has been fully designed by a pro bono team of energy consultants, who modelled the centre's demand activity by activity and sized the solution to match. Local suppliers have been engaged for installation and long-term maintenance training for the centre's team.
With its own power supply, the centre can extend training into the evening, introduce computer-based learning, run electric sewing equipment, refrigerate medicines and provide safe, well-lit spaces after dark. The system is designed to last 20+ years with minimal maintenance, and local staff will be trained to operate it independently. Reliable energy turns a centre that already supports its community into one that can reach more people, offer more services and operate on its own terms.
