English Education for Rural Children in China

By Sebastien Carrier, Ph.D. | Program Director

After another strong year in 2025, during which we further strengthened our impact in China, we are proud to share some of our achievements from 2026 so far.

In 2026, we continued our commitment to improving the English proficiency of disadvantaged students across China through high-quality educational interventions. To date, our online English programs have reached 3,121 students across a wide range of provinces and municipalities, including Anhui, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Liaoning, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanghai, Sichuan, Tianjin, and Yunnan — demonstrating the truly nationwide reach of our programs. Classes are delivered either online to students in rural schools or through small-group after-school English sessions for students learning from home.

To support these programs, we recruited and trained more than 260 volunteers, who have collectively delivered over 1,200 English lessons so far. In virtual classrooms, volunteers and teachers used engaging methods such as picture books, text-and-image dialogues, games, competitions, and songs to strengthen students’ language skills while building confidence and enthusiasm for speaking English. We also continued our Phonics classes, helping students develop a stronger understanding of pronunciation rules and significantly improving phonemic awareness, vocabulary acquisition, and reading fluency.

One of the highlights of the 2026 spring semester was the launch of an online English Teachers’ Speaking Corner designed to support local teachers from under-resourced schools in rural China. Thirteen teachers participated in the program, which includes a total of 10 sessions, four of which have already been completed.

None of this would be possible without the commitment of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the continued encouragement of our partners and supporters. Together, we are giving children across China the tools, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey.
