Lack of accessibility to electricity at No. 12 slum of Saltlake area, is a very contextual problem to this area. In other slums where we work, residents have access to illegal electricity supply ("hooking" is the colloquial term) however, here since area has underground supply, hooking isn't feasible, rendering extremely poor electricity access in households. In response to this critical need, Calcutta Rescue plans to implement a solar panel system in 10 households in preliminary stage.
The community actively identified the issue of inadequate electricity through discussions and surveys. They participated in planning decisions for implementing solar panel electricity, engaged in installation labor, formed a youth club for ongoing involvement, and received capacity-building training for maintenance, ensuring project sustainability. This participatory approach not only increases the likelihood of project success but also fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment.
The solar panel project in Saltlake No.12 slum promises significant social benefits. Extended study hours due to evening lighting can enhance educational outcomes. Access to mobile charging and television fosters connectivity, potentially expanding opportunities for information access and economic activities. Additionally, relief from fans during extreme summers improves the comfort and well-being of vulnerable residents.
