It was already a challenge for parents to back their children's education before the Corona Virus Pandemic. Now, with the pandemic putting some families out of jobs, a lot of primary school children will be out of school for the upcoming school year. To curb this, Educate Children has designed the Enrollment Through Local Philanthropy (ETLP) which will identify un-enrolled and drop-out primary age children, document their underprivileged background and identify philanthropists to sponsor them.
Only 44% of primary age children are enrolled in primary grades. Most of these children are over age due to late entry and at risk of dropping out. More pressingly, children in slum communities- our target population- have disproportionately lower access to primary education due to poverty. Our project, ( ETLP) was created to be a solution to primary school dropouts and children whose families cannot afford their tuition.
Through a system of Volunteers Operation in specific local communities,we have embarked on a campaign to identify primary-age children in slum communities who are not enrolled in school. We used a well-designed and standard survey questionnaire to identify primary-age children who truly lack access to,or have dropped out of, primary education due to economic constraints. We created short stories of the pressing need of each child and will use this to sponsor them.
ETLP's impact will be measured straightly based on the number of children we enroll in school. In the first year, we will take the financial burden off of families to provide quality education for their children- impacting around 80 children. We expect to expand to other slum communities across Liberia and impact over 100 children cumulatively.
