Summary

Unfortunately, at present, many communities in Ethiopia lack access to clean and safe water. As a result, hygiene and sanitation are often sidelined because precious supplies are reserved for drinking or farming. Poor hygiene can lead to more people getting bacterial infections such as trachoma, a devastating but preventable eye disease that, if left untreated, can lead to irreversible blindness. This is why water, sanitation and hygiene activities are crucial in combatting trachoma.

Challenge

Trachoma is a highly infectious bacterial infection of the eye that, if left untreated, leads to permanent blindness. The spread of trachoma could easily be prevented by improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities (WASH). At present, community members must travel long distances to fetch water and schools often do not have access to water. The water collected is precious and will be used for vital household functions, and face and hand washing are not a priority.

Solution

Access to clean and healthy water encourages face and hand washing, preventing bacteria from spreading and thereby reducing the trachoma incidence. By supporting this project, you will support Orbis in constructing six water points. This will give over 6,000 students access to clean and safe water, thereby drastically reducing the risk of transmitting bacterial infections.

Long-Term Impact

The access and use of sanitation facilities across the community and schools are crucial in sustaining achievements in eliminating the blinding disease trachoma and other health problems. Over the next three years, Orbis will establish 30 community and school water points. Adequate access can prevent many diseases while contributing to overall well-being and educational and economic opportunities, and access to safe water and sanitation are fundamental human rights.
