Summary

Poverty is the cause of Osa's depletion of natural resources. To protect our natural environment, reduce vulnerability to climate change, and promote food security, our environmental education program is working with hundreds of families and has empowered and trained them about their leading role as stewards of the environment and changemakers. We promote climate-friendly agriculture, restore ecosystems, and plant trees to promote stewardship of the natural environment and produce healthy food.

Challenge

Without good economical options, communities continue logging and hunting. Therefore, economic development and environmental awareness are essential to achieve long-term solutions to protect our natural resources and reduce vulnerability to climate change. A sustained program focused on empowering communities and putting knowledge into action, like providing them tools such as regenerative agriculture and analog forest restoration; we hope to create food independence and ecosystem restoration.

Solution

Our environmental education program has empowered hundreds of children since 2003, focusing on Creating Environmental Leaders: the next leaders of social, ecological, and economic development for their community. They will be leading and reducing vulnerability to climate change. Since 2020, we have focused on training their families on regenerative agriculture to generate resilience to crisis and climate change, promote food security and restore their ecosystems.

Long-Term Impact

Our program started in 2003, and some of the kids who participated in our program are now adults. Children who participate in the program grow up with excellent soft skills such as self-respect, leadership, teamwork, respect, and love for their environment. Some of them are now the new leaders of their communities and take over new challenges to protect their environment and their communities. Promoting regenerative agriculture will generate resilience among families in poverty.
