By Appolinaire NDAYISENGA | Project Leader
It has been three months since we launched our project and we are pleased to report that the groundwork for our "Health Heroes" initiative is officially laid. Our first priority was the careful recruitment of our first cohort of Community Health Workers (CHWs). These individuals are the heartbeat of our strategy, acting as the vital link between remote families and the professional services at Rukundo Medical Polyclinic. By selecting local champions who are already trusted by their neighbors, we have ensured that our project has a strong, community-led foundation.
With our first cohort now onboarded, we are currently focused on the training phase. Our workers are undergoing intensive instruction in Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) protocols. This phase is critical; before we hand over diagnostic kits or bicycles, we must ensure our heroes have the professional knowledge to use them effectively. This training equips them to recognize early warning signs of frequent illnesses like malaria and malnutrition, ensuring that when they begin their field visits, they do so as skilled primary healthcare providers capable of saving lives.
As we look to the next quarter, we are preparing to transition from the classroom to the community. While we have not yet procured the physical diagnostic kits and transport tools, the funds we are raising now are being carefully managed to begin these purchases in the coming period. Our next milestone is to equip these newly trained heroes with the bicycles and medical kits they need to reach the most vulnerable families. Thank you for your continued support as we build this healthcare lifeline for 25,000 community members in Burundi.
