The project will support free on-site and residential training for Malaysian blind children with multiple disabilities from age 0 - 18. The training provided includes daily living skills, motor skills, orientation and mobility training, communication and social skills, relevant academic and functional skills and pre-vocational skills. These skills will equip our children to live life to the fullest.
The disability of deaf-blindness and coupled with other disorders, brings unique challenges to families, teachers and caregivers. Issues ranging from daily care to health care, training and stigma arise from the day of birth. We must make sure that these children have access to the world beyond the limited reach of her or his eyes, ears and fingertips so that they can realize their full potential in life.
Over the years, teachers and trainers patiently guide, train and equip the children with basic skills like feeding and dressing themselves, brushing teeth, doing the laundry, setting the table, washing dishes and so on. This is to help them to be independent in looking after themselves and also to assist in simple daily chores around the house. In addition, parents are included in planning training schedules and are closely involved int the work the school does in training the children
By training the child to be independent, we hope to enable the children to be a unifying factor in their families. With proper training and support from their families and St. Nicholas' Home, the children will be able to integrate into their families and communities and contribute positively. They will also be able to lead more fulfilling and independent lives side-by-side their mainstream peers
