Summary

This project will equip four island communities with reliable transportation, life jackets, and radios needed to safely and effectively patrol and communicate across the coastal areas they manage - some of the richest coral reefs in the world! OneReef is one of six winners from 82 applicants across the world for the Blue Climate Initiative's Community Award for Ocean-Related Climate Solutions.

Challenge

50% of coral reefs have died in the last 30 years and 90% are projected to die within the next century. Remote communities throughout Micronesia are working to address over-fishing, pollution, and climate change - the causes of coral reef decline. Pacific Islanders currently risk their lives to protect reefs that provide economic, cultural, and health benefits to us all - and we can help by providing reliable transportation, communication, and safety equipment.

Solution

Together, OneReef and island communities work to enforce no-take areas, monitor reef health, and build social cohesion. Through our partnerships, we acquire equipment and training needed to patrol protected zones, assess ecosystem health, and adapt to changing conditions. With these resources, island communities of Pohnpei will more effectively protect and monitor coral reef ecosystems and reinforce traditional stewardship.

Long-Term Impact

This project will equip island communities working together to manage over 50,000 acres of vibrant reefs, allowing for recovered fish stocks, local employment, and reinforcement of cultural values. Island communities, those most vulnerable to depleted coastal resources, have the most to gain from effective protection and monitoring. Together, we are taking local action in the face of climate change and other threats.
