Summary

DEEP provides paid internships to economically disadvantaged college students, focusing on sustainable STEM education. We also offer scholarships for international service learning projects to high school students from low-income backgrounds, fostering intercultural understanding and sustainability. We aim to develop a generation of innovators who are passionate about deep ecology principles, creating not just academic growth but nurturing individuals committed to change and valuing all life.

Challenge

The lack of access to paid internships and international service learning opportunities for low-income students perpetuates a cycle of disparity. Beyond individual advancement, this situation stifles the potential growth of marginalized communities. Addressing this imbalance is crucial for equipping students with diverse skills and fostering well-rounded individuals committed to creating an environmentally sustainable and socially equitable world.

Solution

DEEP strengthens economically disadvantaged students by providing paid internships and scholarships for global service missions. We promote sustainable STEM learning, encouraging deep ecology values and cultivating innovators. By addressing opportunity access inequality, we aim to unlock the potential of these students, endowing them with varied skills that foster societal change towards environmental sustainability and social equity.

Long-Term Impact

The purpose of DEEP's programming is to develop community partnerships capable of addressing environmental justice issues and improving the quality of life through a methodology that provides individuals with opportunities for leadership, participation, and social capital formation. It has the potential to equip the next generation of Richmond citizens to create successful futures for themselves and the city at large.
