Most rural schools in Nigeria lack first aid kits, leaving children helpless during injuries or emergencies. This project by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research will provide first aid kits and basic safety training to teachers and pupils in rural schools. It will help manage injuries, bites, and accidents that occur on school grounds or while walking long distances to school, preventing avoidable deaths and ensuring safer learning environments.
Rural Nigerian schools have no basic medical kits to treat injuries or emergencies. Students often suffer from cuts, falls, and insect or snake bites while walking to or from school. With no first aid supplies, even minor injuries can become serious or fatal. Many teachers are untrained in basic emergency care, leaving children without immediate help before reaching a clinic, which may be several miles away.
The project will supply well-stocked first aid kits to rural schools and train teachers on emergency response. Each kit will include disinfectants, bandages, antiseptics, and snakebite supplies. Teachers and older students will be taught basic first aid, ensuring quick action during injuries or health incidents. These kits will save lives, reduce suffering, and make rural schools safer for learning and daily attendance.
Providing first aid kits and training will make rural schools better prepared for emergencies. Immediate care for cuts, burns, or bites will reduce complications and deaths among students. Trained teachers will continue to pass on first aid knowledge, ensuring lasting safety awareness. The project will build confidence among parents and communities that schools are safe places where children can learn and grow without unnecessary risk.
