Zimbabwe's children do not have access to free schooling, so Makomborero gives talented students the opportunity to change their lives through education. During their 2 years with us, our students receive academic scholarships and full pastoral care to successfully complete their A-levels. Our recently donated Resource Centre provides them with a safe learning environment and comfortable home. However, it needs a few improvements - new mattresses and pillows, updated washing facilities, etc.
In Zimbabwe, unemployment runs at 90%, and life expectancy is around 35 years old. Life here revolves around a daily struggle to put food on the table. The focus is on survival. Makomborero's students are from poor high density suburbs where families live in squalid informal settlements. Child abuse is prevalent. Many children are orphans, shunted from home to home between relatives. Their schools are without adequate learning facilities such as text books, teachers and even blackboard chalk.
We have recently been donated a fantastic centre for our students. Previously this property was home to an older couple but is now home to our 16 students, providing them with a safe and restorative space in which to study their A-levels. Under Makomborero's guidance our students consistently achieve top results and have gone on to get university scholarships around the world. We strive to build well rounded people who have a passion for their communities and for the future of Zimbabwe.
Our Resource Centre has the potential to become a hub for all of Makomborero's work. It will continue to be a residential home for our 16 scholarship students each year. It provides space for our mobile Science Laboratory, allowing students from other schools access to science experiments. It will also enable us to run Revision Lessons for 300 students every year. The Centre will not only impact the academic achievements of our students but allow us to help even more of Zimbabwe's children.
