Challenge

Kenya is a large and diversified economy with a population of nearly 50 million people (50.1 percent female). The Global Gender Gap Report 2017 ranks Kenya 76 out 144 globally with significant inequalities between males and females in education attainment, land and other natural resource ownership, health outcomes, representation in parliament and participation in the labor market impeded by discriminatory customary laws, biased attitudes, prevailing social stigmas, and a lack of awareness.

Solution

CEMAWO will utilize local community structured to promote women's leadership in sustainable agriculture production, increase the commitment of communities and local authorities to such leadership and rights for women and girls and strengthening partnership with other organization working in the same field such as GROOTS Kenya, Care Kenya, Bio-Vision Africa, KALRO, and Kilimo Biashara Enterprises among others for general development of the organization and sustainability of the project.

Long-Term Impact

Women and girls will be empowered to own land and other natural resources from their spouses and parents and utilize modern sustainable agricultural practices that are environmental friendly to produce food for their families for sustainable developments. Through community advocacy and awareness creation, the community will be sensitized on bad cultural practices that undermine the rights of women and young girls in the community. Partnership linkages will also be straightened.
