Summary

In 2015, EarthSpark took a leap forward in tackling energy poverty, by connecting the town of Les Anglais to their inaugural solar micro-grid. With a second solar grind now serving the town of Tiburon, EarthSpark is working to scale-up access to affordable, reliable, clean electricity to reach another 80,000 people in the next 4 years. We're building not just grids but also precedent to open the door for widespread adoption of clean, efficient electricity systems across rural Haiti.

Challenge

In Haiti, 75% of households (7.5 million people) lack access to electricity and many spend at least 10% of their income on kerosene and candles for lighting, even more for phone charging and charcoal for cooking. In other words, Haiti's unelectrified pay a high premium for low-quality energy services, which in turn, are not only expensive but bad for their health, bad for the environment, and are a real barrier to development.

Solution

EarthSpark works with communities in Haiti to build smart, solar-powered electricity grids. Affordable, reliable, local electricity unlocks economic opportunity, improves health, and shows the way forward for clean, resilient, and participatory energy systems worldwide.

Long-Term Impact

By the end of 2026, EarthSpark is aiming to have launched 24 grids, directly service over 80,000 people with reliable electricity for the first time. This will not only unlock opportunity for the towns with the grids, it will also open the door for widespread microgrid development across rural Haiti.
