Summary

The project aims at improving well-being and protection of 45 orphan girls in a rural village in the north-west of Asmara (Eritrea), hosted in the foster home "Casa Foca". In one of the poorest countries of the world, where military service is compulsory and families are mainly composed by mothers and young children, chances of survival are low. The project wants to support 45 girls without one or both their parents, providing a safe accommodation, daily meals, medical cares and school supplies.

Challenge

Eritrea is one of the poorest countries of the world: 65% of the population lives in rural areas and about 80% relies on subsistence farming. One of the most worrying challenges is the male compulsory military service that considerably impoverishes the productive capacity of the Country and makes families composed by mothers and children. Maternal mortality is high and a great part of children remains orphan of one or both parents withous a proper support.

Solution

The project wants to support "Casa Foca", the foster home located in a rural village in the north-west of Asmara, which hosts 45 girls (orphan of one or both their parents). Thanks to the project the young girls will receive a safe accommodation, daily food, medical care and education. In a country where the road to peace is still long, where every day schools and dispensaries are closed and families are separated, child protection and support is really fundamental.

Long-Term Impact

The project will follow 45 orphan girls in their growth process inside the foster home together with a peer group and adult people of reference. Thanks to medical care and safe food, their health conditions will be improved; all the recipient girls will receive a proper education, allowing them to rise out of poverty and to contribute to their family's health and well-being (when the girls have at least one parent and/or other relatives) and to the well-being of the community.
