Summary

Ethiopia with a population of about 100 million, 80% of the population heavily depends on traditional medicine for their primary healthcare system. There is great potential in the country in the utilization of indigenous medicine and healthcare practices to heal many human & animal illnesses. The demand for medicine is very high; and the country is rich with manuscripts of ancient knowledg, variety of plant and animal species that have significant relevance to medicine and healthcare practices.

Challenge

Though Ethiopia has rich resources and manuscripts that are about indigenous and traditional medicines and healing practices that could be used for larger community, little has been done in this regard. These indigenous medication and healthcare practices have been far from reaching the huge mass locally and beyond to provide medical solutions. The gap in the area calls for initiatives to get indigenous medication and healthcare practices implemented effectively to tackle shortage of medicine.

Solution

There is a huge potential in Ethiopia in the implementation of indigenous medicine and healthcare practices to heal illnesses with the support of outcomes through scientific research and treatment; with the involvment of traditional healthcare practitioners and healers of different human and animal illnesses. This medicinal research center coordinates and mobilize the existing natural and human resources in Ethiopia towards creating value of common good, by ensuring the availability of medicine.

Long-Term Impact

The Centre has great potential in the utilization of indigenous medicine through scientific research and mobilise healthcare practices to heal illnesses; even those human and animal diseases for which solution has not been found yet. This Ethiopian indigenous medicine research centre will also have significance in searching, developing, promoting and making available indigenous medicinal and healthcare products not just to people at local and national levels; but also at an international level .
